Essential Skills For Preppers

Every prepper should possess the knowledge and abilities to deal with various emergency scenarios. These may include survival skills, first aid/cooking techniques, self-defense tactics, firearms proficiency, small engine repair techniques, and more.

However, some essential skills that may not be as popular or well-known as others are nonetheless incredibly beneficial to know and will make your prepping life much simpler.

Knife Skills

Knives are essential tools for survival and the ability to use them effectively is paramount. Not only can a knife help you get through difficult situations without making things worse, but it should always be your go-to item, no matter where in life you find yourself.

Knives can be used for more than just cutting, so it’s essential to learn how to utilize them effectively. For instance, a good hunting knife can be useful for many tasks like skinning, gutting, and quartering animals – an invaluable skill set!

Hunters must know how to effectively and humanely use their knives in any survival scenario. Knowledge of knife handling is invaluable when facing off against predators.

When learning how to use a knife, it’s essential that you practice with one that has sharp edges and the proper handle. Utilizing dull blades can lead to injuries.

Another essential skill to master is how to cut fruits and vegetables accurately, so they cook evenly. Cutting produce into uniform pieces also helps ensure an even cooking experience for everyone.

A proper cutting board is an absolute must. Not only does this improve how you hold your knife, but it can also protect you from injuries caused by accidents in the kitchen.

First Aid

Acquiring basic first aid skills can be immensely helpful for those in need of assistance. Not only does it prevent minor injuries from getting worse, but providing first aid could potentially save lives during a medical crisis.

Exercising first aid skills can give you confidence and power in any emergency, particularly when it comes to saving someone’s life. Fortunately, there are numerous organizations offering training on first aid for both children and adults alike.

For instance, the International Lifesaving Club provides various drills that can be useful for honing your first aid skills. These exercises are designed to test those same abilities in different scenarios and will make it easier to feel confident during a real survival situation.

When administering first aid, three critical principles to remember are airway, breathing and circulation. If someone is unconscious and not breathing, begin by clearing their airway; then give them rescue breaths until they can breathe on their own.

When administering first aid to someone, always wash your hands after each interaction. Doing this helps protect both yourself and the person being cared for from germ contamination.

Wilderness Survival

Preppers know that having basic survival skills can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency. From surviving a natural disaster to protecting yourself from predators, having these abilities can mean the difference between staying alive and allowing bad situations to take control of your life.

The wilderness offers incredible opportunities to connect with nature and develop self-reliance skills. However, it can also be dangerous if you’re not adequately prepared.

That is why it’s essential to learn some wilderness survival skills and techniques before ever venturing out into the wild. These tips can help you hone your abilities, get more out of each trip, and stay healthy while in the wilderness.

Fire-starting: In order to cook food, maintain body heat, and boil water, you’ll need to learn how to start a fire. You can use friction fire-starting methods like flint and steel or ferro rods in order to create a spark and light your campfire.

Food is an integral part of any survival strategy, providing energy and aiding in recovery from injuries. If you’re out in the wild, foraging for plants that can be eaten safely is key to remaining healthy and strong. While many foods are edible, some look-alike plants may be poisonous, so it’s important to be familiar with identifying these.

Hunting: Wild animals are a natural source of protein, so developing your hunting skills can help you survive in the wild when the SHTF. Whether you’re a veteran or a beginner, learning to trap animals can be a time-efficient way to catch prey.

Firemaking

Fire is an essential tool in any survival kit. Not only does it purify water, cook food, signal rescuers, and provide warmth, but its presence also keeps predators at bay.

Making fire requires knowledge of several methods and some basic tools. These include flint, a fire striker, and char cloth.

One way to build a sustainable fire is to collect dry tinder from twigs and branches that are about the size of a pencil. This is a vital first step in any fire-building strategy and should be gathered in a safe and dry location.

Another method for collecting tinder is to tear up paper products such as a rolled-up newspaper or the cover of a book. You can also use items like dried leaves, grass, or splinters to create a tinder nest.

For larger tinder nests, dig a large hole into the ground and fill it with a dense layer of tinder. Start by placing a large piece of seasoned wood into the ground and stacking other logs on top of it.

Adding fuel wood to the tinder is an essential next step and can be done by hand or with an axe, hatchet or even a bow.

There are other methods of starting a fire, but these two methods are the most popular and secure. A tinderbox can also be utilized with some logs for more delicate starts.

Another method of fire-making is friction. This involves grinding pieces of solid combustible material (such as wood) against each other and a hard surface, then heating them until an ember form and oxygen is added through blowing.

Friction fire can be ignited with a variety of tools such as percussion caps, primers, and flamethrowers. While this task requires skill, knowledge, and fitness to execute effectively under various environmental conditions, it remains achievable. The best tool for this technique is a bow drill.

A bow drill is a hand-held tool that allows you to rapidly grind wood against another piece of the same wood until an ember is created. Alternatively, you can use a small spindle that is crafted using wood.

To use a bow drill, you will need to first set up the fireboard for a sitting or kneeling position with your foot or a kneel on top of the board. A divot in the bottom of the board helps to guide the bow into the embers.

It is recommended that you start by working with softer hardwoods, such as basswood or willow. The bow, spindle, and hearth plate should be made of either hardwood or hardwood such as oak or maple. A wooden handhold should be used to help steady the spindle when it is moving over the fireboard.

Gielinor requires you to have the essential skill of being able to make fire, but it can be challenging to reach that level where you can do so every time you need one. Furthermore, some buildings – such as the Grand Exchange – will not permit burning within their walls.

Wild Plant Identification

Wild plants are an integral part of nature and have many uses, including food. By learning to identify the plants that grow nearby, you can safely harvest and consume them when needed.

Plants are a diverse group of organisms with an array of colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. To correctly identify a plant species, an easy-to-observe system must be employed that takes into account readily observable characteristics that are comparable.

Before venturing out into the field, it is essential to acquire some basic plant identification skills. After mastering these fundamentals, you can begin exploring your local ecosystem for wild edible and medicinal plants that thrive there.

Use a Local Guide: A plant identification guide that includes only plants from your region is likely to be more accurate than a generalized guide. Using the Jepson Manual to identify Mariposa lilies in California, for example, can lead to many mistakes.

Having a quick reference sheet with ID tips will be an invaluable tool for preppers in the field. If you haven’t gotten a copy of a guidebook, there are several online sources to check out for information on specific local plants.

Start by taking a photo of the plant you’re trying to identify. Be sure to include any distinctive features such as flowers, bark, seeds or berries in your photo. Then you can use the image later to review it and help you narrow down the possible candidates.

Practice your identification skills by observing the plants in your area and learning the differences between them. Take a hike or visit a national park to familiarize yourself with the different types of plant life in your area.

Once you upload your photos, iNaturalist will offer some suggestions as to what species of plant it thinks it is. It also tells you if other visually similar plants have been seen nearby; this helps identify whether the plant you are identifying is native or invasive.

Trapping

Traps can be extremely useful in survival situations. Some are simple enough for anyone to construct, while others require advanced skill and expertise for successful use. If you’re looking to improve your prepper skills, learning to trap can help you get more out of the land.

While most of us are familiar with mousetraps and how they work, there is actually a wide range of different trap types that you can use in the wild. They include body-gripping traps, snares, foothold traps, and cages.

Snares are great for catching mice or rats in a variety of environments. They are easy to set and use, making them a very practical skill to learn. A wire snare will trap small animals without using much ammunition, allowing you to capture more than one animal at a time.

To create a snare, make sure you have a strong loop of cordage that can be set across an animal trail or other location that is likely to attract animals to your trapping site. Next, you’ll need a trigger mechanism and a spring stick of some sort that will quickly jerk the animal up into the air when triggered.

Deadfall traps are also an excellent choice for many trappers, especially those who live in rural areas. These traps can kill the wild game by hanging from a tree branch, and they’re simple to use as long as you know how to set them. If you are new to deadfall traps, you might want to start with the Paiute and Figure 4 styles, which are both very sensitive but don’t require wire.

The first step to setting any type of snare is to find a path where there is evidence of animal activity and where the animals will be likely to travel. Identify the best place to set your traps and check them often so that they don’t become a snare for other predators as well.

They can be used to catch larger animals such as foxes, coyotes, and raccoons.

Trapping is an invaluable skill for any survivalist and can protect you and your shelter location from intruders or thieves. It may also be used effectively in the wild to eliminate certain animal types, such as squirrels and rabbits.

Many individuals who have managed to survive long-term in a survival situation will learn how to trap. Unfortunately, trapping is usually illegal in most places so it’s essential that you review the trapping laws of your state before beginning to trap.

A knowledgeable trapper will recognize animal signals, such as scents, sounds, and movements. They’ll also place traps in places where an animal may travel or leave trails like grass and brush.

When trapping, use the appropriate bait and lure for the species you are targeting. Keep traps away from heavily traveled paths and residential areas to minimize the capture of non-target species.

If you’re ready to begin learning how to trap, there is plenty of information online and in books and magazines. But the most effective approach is getting involved with a community of experienced trappers and taking advantage of their knowledge and experience!

Shelter Building

Creating shelter is one of the most essential abilities for preppers. Without adequate protection in a wilderness survival situation, you could quickly succumb to exposure.

Preppers can build various shelters to survive in the wilderness, such as A-frame tarps and lean-to shelters. All of them are easy to construct and provide protection from elements. You should be able to get a tarp up within 10 minutes or less, giving you plenty of time to perform other survival tasks.

The most effective shelter is built close to the ground so it can be easily hung. This will give you protection from wind and rain while also allowing air to move under the shelter.

Maintaining your shelter close to the ground provides protection from rain and wind while also allowing for greater airflow underneath. When creating an A-frame, begin by suspending a line of cordage between two trees or similar supports. Attach the ends of your tarp directly onto this tree or trees and drape it over top.

Once your shelter is constructed, cover it with leaves, pine branches, and other debris for insulation. This will keep the exterior warm and dry while offering you a cool place to sleep at night.
